I walked into a room full of people from all caste, creed and color and a fervent dance instructor 2 years ago. I have not been able to walk out the room ever since. The first thing that I noticed about Deepali was her amazing energy and the immensely positive vibe. After having known her for more than 2 years I can say that her pool of energy is never-ending. She walks with this amazing ‘can do’ attitude and nothing dampens her spirits. For her, dance is not about the glittery costumes or stage performances. For her, it is more about fostering a sense of community. Deepali goes out of her way to create a family away from family. The feeling of belongingness to this family is unmissed. Her love for novelty and appetite for dance is reflected in every routine she choreographs. She is personally invested in the growth of each of her students, not only as a dancer, but also as a person. Deepali’s enthusiasm, determination, zest of life, laughter, and positive vibe are very infectious. She is not only a wonderful dancer but also a fierce friend. She is a successful mother, wife, dance instructor, and project manager and probably one of the few Superwomen I know. I moved to Seattle 2.5 years ago with no friends here and now I have more than 50 friends. This happened only through Live2Dance. Live2Dance is THE place in Seattle which is always filled with love, laughter, dance and joy. In my honest opinion, there should a place like Live2Dance in every city to connect people with similar interests. Deepali works very hard to network across all communities in Seattle to bring new talent to every session. She then works even more harder to retain all of them. We have performed in various events including charity balls, community festivals, talent competitions, etc. Apart from regular sessions, Deepali always had the dream to have her own production house. With her passion, she brought together 15 tech professionals with no theater experience in Seattle and formed an informal group Live2Dance Productions. This team had enrolled 50 more tech professionals and created the magic of Desi Detour in front of 450 people. This proves that she truly is a leader. Lastly, her energy is so contagious and her passion towards dance is so strong that she continues to dance while being pregnant with a baby girl 🙂

The name ‘Live2Dance-Seattle’ rings a bell as an active, prominent Bollywood dance group based in Seattle on the surface, but it is not just that. It is a vibrant, pulsing community of individuals who may have come from different backgrounds and interests; but they’ve been all bound together by what may have initially been a thread of curiosity for dance, but was soon weaved, and solidified into a strong long-lasting bonding fabric by Deepali Jamwal, the anchoring captain of this dance-ship. Having been a part of this community in Seattle since it began, I have experienced first-hand the conscious effort and interest that Deepali takes to ensure that a connection is built with every individual who enters the studio. Deepali as a teacher, makes sure to break up the choreography of a song into smaller distinct steps, and repeats them checking that both beginners and proficient are able to replicate it; all the while encouraging them to not be limited by their own perceived skill-levels, and verbally acknowledging any and all attempts and improvements. The sheer energy that she brings into the class is infectious and inspiring! When she asks everyone to perform at a certain energy level putting their heart into it, she always makes sure that she puts in at least double the level of this baseline and maintains it throughout, irrespective of how exhausted she may be herself. Along with managing time with her child and family, she makes sure that everyone in this extended Live2Dance family that she has adopted and built, are connected and smooths out any creases of conflict, by resolving them in the bud through considerate conversation. Deepali has a very well-drawn out vision for the path and eventual future of Live2Dance for which the next level began last year with the premiere of ‘Desi Detour’, the dance-drama musical show that ran for over 90 minutes, spanned a cast of over 50 crew members and showcased to an audience of over 500. With the first-time attempt at a show taking off at such a scale, I would love to see the new heights of creativity and reach that Deepali will take Live2Dance to, next.

Deepali’s passion for dance, her high energy choreography and ‘anybody can dance’ attitude makes the dance sessions extremely fun and a great learning experience. She has also built a strong community that I immediately felt welcomed in. No matter whether you are a beginner or experienced dancer, Deepali works hard at ensuring that everyone feels like a part of the Live2Dance family. Live2Dance is not just a dance group. This is a dance family.” This is what Deepali told everyone when I attended my very first day at live2dance two years ago. I didn’t believe that at that time. But eventually I understood how Deepali was building a community of dance enthusiasts, and you don’t need to know those songs or dance moves. I had lived in Seattle two years before Joining live2dance and I never felt I was part of any community. I lived in a ‘foreign’ country for work. Thanks to Deepali, I now feel like I am part of a community that she built singlehandedly. It is my support system and most of the people in live2dance have been my good friends. I don’t feel I live in Seattle for work alone. I did not become part of this family because of my ethnicity. I still don’t follow Bollywood movies or songs. I became part of this community because of the positive effect it had on me. Deepali’s routines are very energetic and fun. They have been part of my fitness journey. Deepali is an incredible teacher. She could make anyone dance with her amazing dance techniques and teaching skill. I am glad that I know Deepali personally. She is someone with strong principles and follow it whole heartedly. She always spreads positivity to others, and it is infectious. I have been implementing many of her principles in my life and I believe this makes me a better person every day.
